Tamil Nadu CM Stalin Says Water Being Released from Mettur Dam for Cultivation
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced the release of water from the Mettur Dam to farmers in the state. The water release, seen as the start of the irrigation season, is vital for farmers in the Cauvery delta region to start preparing fields, particularly for the kuruvai (short-term) paddy crop.
The CM underlined government’s unstinted support to the farming community and for prompt supply of water for irrigation. The shift would favour thousands of farmers and increase agricultural productivity in the region.
Salem district’s Mettur Dam is an important reservoir of Tamil Nadu and it is a lifeline for the state’s irrigation system. This is considered a positive step because zeroing water from the dams around monsoons has been a matter of concern, particularly in the light of poor rainfall and water availability.
